Eastlink Application to install a telecommunication tower at 1000 Cole Harbour Road

The Planning Division of the HRM held a Public Information Meeting on June 20, 2011 (Case#16986). After this meeting, a group opposed to the erection of this telecommunication tower formed and petitions circulated.

HRM Planning will bring forward its recommendation on this case at the September 15 meeting of Harbour East Community Council. At which time, three options will be considered (1) Go forward with Planning's recommendation (2) Go forward with Planning's recommendation with conditions, or (3) Do not go forward with Planning's recommendation.

HRM's process will end after Council's recommendation is passed on to Industry Canada (Federal Agency) if the recommendation is in favour of the tower location. If the recommendation forwarded is negative, or against the proposed location, then HRM enters into dispute resolution with Eastlink and Industry Canada in order to resolve the impasse. Industry Canada essentially has the final say.

Should anyone have concerns on this case and would like to have their comments become part of the public record, please contact me and provide your comments/concerns.

lorelei.nicoll@halifax.ca

Sidney Crosby Stanley Cup Celebration

WHAT A DAY FOR COLE HARBOUR!

On Friday, August 7, Sidney Crosby brought the Stanley Cup home to Cole Harbour. We knew it was going to be a big event, but could not have guessed that an estimated 75,000 people would converge in Cole Harbour.

I was present on stage when the Mayor declared August 7 as Sidney Crosby Day and to witness the sea of people from that vantage point was an image I won't soon forget.

On behalf of the community, I appreciate that Sidney Crosby has put Cole Harbour on its well deserved 'spot on the map'.

Please continue to be involved in Cole Harbour with its many assets so we can keep it there!

June Newsletter

Dear Residents:

“How am I enjoying my new job?” That is a question I am asked most often from many of you, and with this newsletter, I will attempt to answer the question.

Regional Council has just passed their budget for 2009-10 and HRM By Design has been the subject of much debate and was passed on June 16. For further information, please visit http://www.halifax.ca.

My first winter as Councillor was particularly severe with a record number of 26 snow storms which resulted in an unusually large number of potholes! Many of these potholes have been patched/ repaired by HRM Operations especially on Bissett Road, Merrimac Drive, Cole Harbour Road with work ongoing on Colby Drive. Remember to report any damage such as potholes, curb damage and sod damage by calling the HRM Call Centre at 490-4000.

When I am not busy with matters of Regional Council, I am busy with opportunities to meet many of you in the community on an ongoing basis.

The safety of our community is vital, and in that regard, I meet regularly with the Cole Harbour RCMP, who need us to be their eyes and ears much of the time. If you have concerns with matters of public safety or illegal activity, I encourage you to call the Police Dispatch Centre at 490-5020, or in the case of an emergency situation, call 911.

Cole Harbour Place and the community have struck up a volunteer committee which will help the community identify what residents in the area want from an expanded facility. They are asking community groups, sports associations, schools, churches, service groups and individuals for their input. If you wish to participate, please go to http://www.halifax.ca and complete their survey.

It is encouraging to know that people volunteer in various ways in Cole Harbour. The Lion’s Club are very active and would like to grow if space became available. On February 9, I attended a Public Speaking night which the Lion’s Club hold every year to provide our youth with a wonderful opportunity to hone their skills and provide a voice for what matters to them.

The volunteers with the Kiwanis Club of Cole Harbour spent many hours again this winter providing an outdoor skating surface at the Kiwanis Park on Caldwell Road where many took advantage of the outdoor experience.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 160 on Main Street held a “Battle of the Minds” on April 18 which proved to be a real fun time for myself and all those in attendance. Thanks to Mary Boutin and her team of volunteers!

To honour our many volunteers, HRM held a Volunteer Appreciation Night on April 22, where five members from Cole Harbour were honoured for their volunteerism. Presenting these awards was very meaningful to me as I have volunteered many hours myself and continue to do so. I realize the importance of volunteers and the tireless work they do. Our community needs its volunteers and we are a stronger community for it. If you know of a volunteer who you would like recognized in the future, please let me know.

It may have been a severe winter, but as you can see, many in Cole Harbour knew how to make it go by and kept busy. And now that summer is here, be sure to find time to check out the many activities and events planned in our municipality by visiting http://www.coleharbourplace.com.

Do I enjoy my new job of representing Cole Harbour on Regional Council? YOU BET!

Thanks for the opportunity, it is truly an honour to represent you!

Lorelei
